Left or Right Side of Tractor --- Refers to your right or left side when you are sitting ON the tractor, in the seat, facing forward.
====================================

Determination of Front-mount Distributor or Side-mount Distributor

Front-mounted --- Distributor is mounted in the front face of the timing gear cover, below the water pump. They have a square-ish ignition coil that sits partly on the distributor, and partly on the cap. The spark plug wires attach to the cap on opposite sides, two per side. Breaker point gap is 0.025 in.

Side-mounted or Angle-mounted --- Distributor is angled out to the right side of the engine, above the governor. All of the plug wires attach to the top of the cap. A round ignition coil is mounted nearby, with high voltage lead going from the coil to center of the distributor cap. Breaker point gap is 0.015 in.

Determination of Sleeve Wall Thickness: .090 / Heavy-wall versus .040 / Thin-wall cylinder sleeves

Diamonds or stars accompanying the tractor serial number denote whether the engine originally had cast iron or hardened steel sleeves. The sleeves are dry-type with 3.187" standard bore.

Engines with the star stamped before and after the serial number originally had the steel sleeves with a sleeve wall thickness of 0.040 inch (40/1000), referred to as "thin wall". This included 9N, 2N, and 8N prior to s/n 433578.

BEWARE: Over the years, engines having "thin wall" sleeves may have been re-bored to use the later "heavy wall" sleeves. Check the sleeve wall thickness BEFORE ordering replacement sleeves!!!

Engines with the diamond stamped before and after the serial number originally had the cast iron sleeves with a sleeve wall thickness of 0.090 inch (90/1000), referred to as "heavy wall" or "thick wall" sleeves. These were only used on s/n 8N433578 & up.

Serial Number Location
The serial numbers on the Ford 9N, 2N, and 8N tractors are stamped on the left side of the engine block, near the top edge of the block, but may be obscured by the oil filter housing on tractors so equipped.

It is stamped in the format "9Nxxxx" for 9N and 2N, or "8Nxxxxx" for 8N, and will have either a diamond or star stamped before and after the serial number. These tractors do not have a separate transmission or differential serial number.

(Any numbers and letters that are raised, or cast into the part, will be either part numbers or casting numbers. Serial numbers are always stamped.)
